Meta Tag Generator

This meta tag generator writes the title, description, canonical, robots, Open Graph and X (Twitter) card tags for a page, with length checks and live Google and social previews. Fill in the fields and copy the HTML into your page's <head>.

How to use the Meta Tag Generator

  1. 1Write a page title and meta description, using the counters to stay within the ideal length.
  2. 2Add the canonical URL, a social image URL, your site name and your X handle.
  3. 3Choose the content type and whether search engines may index the page and follow its links.
  4. 4Check the Google and social card previews, then copy the HTML into the <head> of the page.

Writing titles and descriptions that get clicks

The title tag is the clickable headline in search results and the default text for browser tabs and bookmarks. It is one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, so put the main topic near the start and keep each title unique. Google truncates titles by pixel width rather than characters, which usually works out at around 50 to 60 characters.

The meta description is not a ranking factor, but it is often shown as the snippet under your title, so it affects whether people click. Summarise the page in 140 to 160 characters, answer the searcher's question and include a reason to visit. Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another passage matches the query better, so a clear, accurate description gives you the best chance of it being used.

Open Graph and X cards

Open Graph tags, the og: properties, control how a link looks when it is shared. They were created by Facebook and are now read by LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, iMessage and many other apps. The essentials are og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image and og:type.

X (Twitter) reads its own twitter:card tag to decide the card layout, and falls back to the Open Graph tags for the title, description and image when the matching twitter: tags are missing, so you do not need to duplicate them. Use summary_large_image for a full-width image card. A 1200 × 630 pixel image works well almost everywhere. Platforms cache previews, so after changing tags use a tool such as the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector to refresh them.

Canonical URLs and robots directives

The same page is often reachable at several addresses: with and without www, with tracking parameters, or with a trailing slash. A canonical link tells search engines which URL is the preferred one, so ranking signals are consolidated instead of split between duplicates. Use an absolute URL and point each page at itself unless it really is a copy of another page. Search engines treat canonicals as a strong hint rather than a strict rule.

The robots meta tag controls indexing. index, follow is the default behavior, so the tag mainly matters when you want noindex to keep a page out of results, or nofollow to stop search engines following its links. A noindex tag only works if crawlers can fetch the page, so never block a noindex page in robots.txt.

Questions? Answers.

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google cuts titles off by pixel width, around 600 pixels on desktop, so wide letters and capitals use up the space faster. Put the most important words first in case it is truncated.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 140 to 160 characters is a good target. Longer descriptions are usually cut off, and Google may show a different snippet from the page if it matches the search better.

What size should my og:image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) works across Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and X. Use an absolute HTTPS URL, keep important content away from the edges, and keep the file under 5 MB.

Why does my old preview still show after I changed the tags?

Social platforms cache link previews. Run the URL through the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector to force a fresh fetch; other apps refresh their cache on their own schedule.

Do I still need a meta keywords tag?

No. Google has said for many years that it ignores the meta keywords tag, and other major search engines give it little or no weight. Spend the effort on your title, description and page content instead.
